Geopark
History

Geological heritage conservation is the Geopark’s far history. By the time, and with the effective legal conservation of this heritage, the Geopark concept emerge slowly as a new holistic territory. More than 20 years ago were acting, in Europe, the first Geopark experiences at the base of the actual Global Geoparks Network.

1991 Archives INA, Digne Declaration

1995-1999

In Europe, experimental projects of Geoparks are developed with support of European Community. UNESCO support actively these initiatives.

2000

Under UNESCO auspices, launching of the
EUROPEAN GEOPARK NETWORK
(EGN)

2004

Under UNESCO auspices, launching of the
GLOBAL GEOPARK NETWORK
(GGN)

2007

Under UNESCO auspices, launching of the 
ASIAN PACIFIC GEOPARK NETWORK
(APGN)

2015

On the 17 November 2015, the 195 Member States
of UNESCO ratified the creation of a new label, the UNESCO Global Geoparks, inside a new program called International Geoscience and Geoparks
(IGGP)

2017

Launching of the LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN
GEOPARK NETWORK

The Canadian National Committee for Geoparks (CNCG) in 2019 became the Canadian Geoparks Network
(CGN)
